Listen and Rebut Respectfully

What students learn

Students learn how to listen carefully, follow debate roles, and answer a counterargument without being rude. Start with to set the tone for the whole discussion.

Why it matters

A debate is not a shouting match. shows that each speaker has a job, and each turn matters.

Learn the idea

Rebuttals work best when they respond to the other side fairly first. shows how to answer the opposing point while keeping the speaker's own claim in view.

Try it

Read a short opinion statement and ask the student to repeat the other side's point before they answer it. Then have them respond with a calm sentence that begins with "I agree that..." or "I understand your point, but..." and continues with a reason.

Parent guide

Model respectful disagreement out loud. Show the student how to listen all the way through, restate the other side fairly, and then reply with evidence instead of attitude. If the student gets heated, pause and restart the response more calmly.
