Build a Strong Debate Claim

What students learn

Students learn how to state a clear claim, explain a reason, and support it with evidence. Begin with to hear the idea of persuading someone in simple terms.

Why it matters

A debate claim is easier to defend when the speaker knows exactly what they believe. shows how evidence makes a claim stronger than opinion alone.

Learn the idea

A good speaker does not stop at one strong sentence. helps students add reasons and think ahead about the points another speaker might raise.

Try it

Have the student choose a simple topic, such as longer recess, fewer homework problems, or more library time. Ask them to say one claim, one reason, and one piece of evidence. If the evidence is weak, ask them to replace it with a fact, example, or specific detail.

Parent guide

Keep the practice focused on one claim at a time. Ask, "What are you trying to prove?" and "What makes that believable?" If the student adds too many ideas, help them cut back to one clear line of argument.
