Map Keys, Symbols, and Directions

What students learn

Students learn that the map key or legend explains the symbols on a map, and that the compass rose helps them find direction. Start with so the legend comes first.

Why it matters

If students cannot read the key, they cannot trust the rest of the map. Use to show that symbols stand for real places and features.

Learn the idea

A map is a coded picture. Symbols, labels, and direction clues help the reader turn that code into useful information. helps students keep north, south, east, and west straight.

Try it

Give the student a simple classroom or neighborhood map and ask them to point to the key, name one symbol, and show where north is. Then ask them to explain what would be confusing if the key were missing.

Parent guide

Ask the child to explain the map in words before they point to anything. If they guess, send them back to the key and the compass rose and have them read each part aloud.
