Course overview

This course helps Grade 5 students read maps more carefully. They learn how to use the map key, symbols, compass rose, and scale, and they practice comparing different kinds of maps and regions.

What students will learn

• Read a map key or legend.

• Read scale to estimate real-world distance.

Work through the lessons in order and use a real map when possible. Ask the student to explain what the map shows, how they know it, and what more they would want to know.

Completion

A student finishes this course when they can read a key, use direction and scale, compare map types, and explain how a map shows regions.
