Book Club Roles and Routines
What students learn
Students learn how a book club works, why a group needs clear roles, and how each reader can help the conversation move forward. Begin with so students see that one shared book can lead to one shared goal.
Why it matters
Book clubs work better when everyone knows what to do. shows how a reader can help by asking questions, noticing patterns, or pointing to a detail.
Learn the idea
A good group does not just take turns talking. It listens, connects ideas, and keeps the discussion moving. shows how one thoughtful question can open the conversation for everyone.
Try it
Ask the student to imagine they are in a book club with three friends. Have them pick one role, say one question they would ask, and explain how that role would help the group talk about the book.
Parent guide
Keep the practice short and playful. Let the student try more than one role over time, but start with one role at a time. If they drift off topic, bring the conversation back to the book and ask what the group is supposed to notice.
