Learn the idea

Try it

Have the student trace the border of a book, table, or paper shape and say each side length out loud before adding. If they get stuck, replay the first moment and point to the edges again.

Parent guide

Use short objects and small numbers first. Ask, "What is the distance all the way around?" Then ask the child to name each side, add the lengths, and explain whether the answer is a length unit, not square units.
