Perimeter as Distance Around

What students learn

Students learn that perimeter is the distance around a shape. Start with and notice how the clip traces the outside edge.

Why it matters

Perimeter shows up when students measure a fence, a border, or the edge of a garden. After that, watch to see why adding every side gives the full distance.

Learn the idea

Perimeter is the sum of all side lengths. helps students see that the same routine works on different polygons when they keep track of each side.

Try it

Have the student trace the border of a book, table, or paper shape and say each side length out loud before adding. If they get stuck, replay the first moment and point to the edges again.

Parent guide

Use short objects and small numbers first. Ask, "What is the distance all the way around?" Then ask the child to name each side, add the lengths, and explain whether the answer is a length unit, not square units.
