Course
Area and Perimeter
A Grade 4 math course that teaches perimeter as distance around, area in square units, and how to solve related problems.
Area and Perimeter
Course overview
This course teaches Grade 4 students how to think about perimeter as the distance around a shape and area as the number of square units inside a shape. Students practice both ideas on rectangles and other simple shapes, then use the same reasoning to solve word problems.
What students will learn
- Explain perimeter as the distance around a shape.
- Find perimeter by adding the side lengths.
- Explain area as square units covering the inside.
- Count square units and use length times width for rectangles.
- Solve and check area and perimeter word problems.
Lessons
- Perimeter as Distance Around - Learn how to measure the outside of a shape.
- Area as Square Units - Learn how to count the inside of a shape with square units.
- Solve Area and Perimeter Problems - Apply area and perimeter ideas to real word problems.
Parent guide
Work through the course in order. Ask your child to say whether they are measuring the outside or the inside before they start solving. Use grid paper, a ruler, and simple household shapes so the ideas stay visible.
Completion
A student finishes this course when they can explain the difference between perimeter and area, calculate each one for a rectangle, and solve a simple word problem using the correct unit.
