Plot Events and Sequence
What students learn
Students learn that plot is the sequence of important events in a story. Begin with to hear how readers track what happens first, next, and last.
Why it matters
Plot helps readers follow the story without getting lost. Sequence matters because events make more sense when they stay in order. and show how to keep the big events in the right order.
Learn the idea
A strong retell names the main characters, says the setting if it matters, and includes the biggest events instead of every tiny detail. After that, the child can check the ending and make sure the story makes sense. Use to practice the order one more time.
Try it
Give the child three picture cards or three story sentences. Ask them to put them in order and explain why. Then have them retell the story using beginning, middle, and end words.
Parent guide
If the child jumps around, stop and ask, "What happened first?" Do not push them to remember every line. Focus on the main events and the order that makes the story clear.
