Course overview

This course teaches Grade 3 students how to read stories with closer attention. Students learn to describe characters by their traits, follow the plot in order, and explain the theme of a simple story.

What students will learn

• Describe characters using clues from actions, words, and choices.

• Explain the theme or message of a story using evidence.

Parent guide

Read short stories, fables, and classroom texts with your child. Ask the same few questions each time: What kind of person is the character? What happened first, next, and last? What lesson or message does the story teach? Repeating the routine helps the ideas stick.

Completion

A student finishes this course when they can describe a character trait with evidence, retell a story in order, and explain a theme in one clear sentence.
