Nouns and Verbs in Sentences

Students learn how nouns and verbs work together to build a simple sentence.

Nouns and Verbs in Sentences

What students learn

Students learn that nouns name people, places, things, and ideas, while verbs tell what the noun does or is. Start with to hear a naming word first, then watch to hear the word that shows action.

Why it matters

When students can spot the noun and the verb, they can understand a sentence more quickly and write one of their own. shows how both parts fit into one clear thought.

Learn the idea

A noun answers "who?" or "what?" and a verb answers "what happens?" In simple sentences, those two parts work together every time. If the child needs another model, replay and have them point to the action word aloud.

Try it

Say three short sentences and ask the child to circle the noun and underline the verb. Then ask them to build one new sentence with a noun and a verb and read it aloud.

Parent guide

Keep the sentences short and familiar. If the child finds only one part, ask, "Who or what is this sentence about?" or "What is it doing?" Then check the other part together.
