Listen and Follow Directions
What students learn
Students learn to listen for a direction, do the action once, and stop when the signal changes. They practice hearing the cue first instead of guessing or rushing ahead.
Why it matters
Listening carefully helps children follow routines at home and school. It also teaches them to wait, watch, and respond in the right order.
Learn the idea
Start with to hear the rule of the game. Then watch to see what happens when the listener follows the cue. Finish with so the child learns that listening again is part of the task too.
Try it
Give one short direction at a time, such as clap, stand, sit, or point. Ask the child to repeat the direction before they do it, then pause between turns so they learn to wait for the next cue.
Parent guide
Keep the practice playful and brief. If the child acts too quickly, gently reset the game and say the direction again. Praise the child for listening first, not just for getting the action right.
