Translations and Reflections on the Coordinate Plane

What students learn

Students learn that a translation slides every point the same way and that a reflection makes a mirror image across a line. Open with Translation: Shift Points Left and Right to see the horizontal move first.

Why it matters

These are the first transformation rules students can describe with coordinates instead of only with pictures. Translation: Shift Points Up and Down helps them notice that vertical movement changes a different coordinate.

Learn the idea

A reflection changes orientation while keeping size and shape the same. Reflection: Flip Across the x-Axis shows how a coordinate can flip sign when the figure crosses the axis.

Try it

Have the student move the point (1, 2) three units right, then two units down, and write the new coordinates. Next, ask them to reflect (4, -3) across the x-axis and explain which coordinate changes sign.

Parent guide

Use graph paper or a drawn grid. Ask the student to name the change in words first, then write the coordinate rule second, so the meaning stays visible.
