Lesson
Coordinate Plane and Ordered Pairs
Students learn to identify quadrants, plot points, and read coordinates in the correct order.
Coordinate Plane and Ordered Pairs
What students learn
Students learn how the x-axis and y-axis divide the plane into quadrants and how ordered pairs locate a point. Start with so the grid layout is clear.
Why it matters
Ordered pairs are the language of the coordinate plane. shows why the x-value comes first and the y-value comes second.
Learn the idea
When students can read a point and then say it back, they are ready to use coordinates for geometry and transformations. gives them a final check on the point name.
Try it
Ask the student to plot (2, 3), (-4, 1), and (0, -5) on a coordinate grid. Then have them read each point aloud and name the quadrant or axis it belongs to.
Parent guide
Keep the work simple and verbal. If the student swaps x and y, have them point across first and then up or down before they write the answer.
