Listen for Main Idea and Details

What students learn

Students learn to hear the big idea in a podcast or talk before they focus on supporting details. Start with so the student hears the main point first.

Why it matters

Good listeners do not try to remember every word. helps students notice which details actually support the main idea.

Learn the idea

A student should also be able to say the idea back in clear language. gives practice turning a long talk into a short, accurate retell.

Try it

Play a short podcast clip or classroom recording and ask the student to answer three questions: What was the big idea? Which detail mattered most? How would you say it in one sentence?

Parent guide

Encourage the student to listen once for the gist, then again for details. If they get stuck, pause the clip and ask them to name the topic first before they hunt for supporting evidence.
