Learn the idea

A switch breaks the path when it is open and completes the path when it is closed. Simple Circuits: Build a Small Switch Loop shows how a small circuit can be designed with a switch in the path.

Try it

Have students sketch a simple circuit with a switch and label where they would stop the current. Ask them to name one safety rule before they try any hands-on building.

Parent guide

Practice the vocabulary "open," "closed," "safe," and "unsafe." If the child wants to build a real circuit, keep it low voltage and adult-supervised.
