Speed and Distance
Students learn that speed connects distance and time in travel situations.
Speed and Distance
What students learn
Students learn that speed tells how far something goes in a certain amount of time. Start with so the idea is clear before the numbers appear.
Why it matters
Speed shows up in car trips, bike rides, walking routes, and race times. helps students notice that the units matter just as much as the number.
Learn the idea
A faster object travels more distance in the same amount of time, or the same distance in less time. gives a simple example of solving for the missing part in the relationship.
Try it
Ask the student to compare two short travel stories, such as a car trip and a walk. Have them identify which one is faster and explain how they know from the distance and time.
Parent guide
Use plain language first: faster, slower, farther, less time. If the student mixes up the values, point back to the clip and have them say the units out loud before solving.
