What students learn

Why it matters

Learn the idea

Try it

Have the student write 1 through 12 in Roman numerals, then circle the ones that use subtraction. Ask them to explain why 4 is IV and 9 is IX.

Parent guide

Keep the focus on the symbol values first. If the student tries to memorize patterns without understanding them, point back to the symbol chart and have them read each numeral aloud.
