Lesson

Coordinate Plane Basics

Students learn the x-axis, y-axis, origin, ordered pairs, and how to graph points in the first quadrant.

Coordinate Plane Basics

What students learn

Students learn how to identify the x-axis, y-axis, and origin, then use ordered pairs to locate points on a grid. Begin with so the layout of the grid is clear.

Why it matters

Coordinate grids help students read maps, track patterns, and organize data. shows why the first number moves sideways before the second number moves up or down.

Learn the idea

In the first quadrant, the axes meet at the origin and ordered pairs are written as x then y. gives students practice turning table values into plotted points.

Try it

Have the student plot (2, 3), (4, 1), and (5, 5) on graph paper. Then ask them to read the coordinates back aloud and explain which move came first.

Parent guide

Start with only the first quadrant so the child can focus on the order of the pair. If they swap x and y, point back to the lesson and have them say, 'across first, then up.'
