Fractions on a Number Line
Students learn to split a number line into equal units and plot fractions at the right point.
Fractions on a Number Line
What students learn
Students learn that a number line can show fractions when it is split into equal units. Begin with to see the line divided fairly, then use to name the denominator from the spaces.
Why it matters
A number line is also a measurement model. The spaces must be equal, the same way inches or other units of measure must stay equal. That is why helps students connect the fraction to a location instead of a memorized rule.
Learn the idea
To plot a fraction, students count the equal spaces from 0 to 1, then count to the marked point. When the spaces are equal, the fraction makes sense as a measured position on the line. The song clip reinforces that the line is not random; it is a carefully measured path.
Try it
Draw a short number line from 0 to 1. Split it into 2, 3, and 4 equal parts on different lines. Ask the student to point to the halfway mark, the third mark, and the quarter mark.
Parent guide
Use a ruler, paper strip, or drawn line so the child can see that the spaces must match. If the marks are uneven, stop and redraw the line before naming any fractions. Keep the language simple: whole, equal units, denominator, and point.
