Observe Material Properties

What students learn

Students learn to describe materials by properties such as hard, soft, flexible, magnetic, conductor, and insulator. Begin with so students hear the first property pair.

Why it matters

Noticing properties helps students choose the right material for the right job. Use to show that materials can have more than one useful property.

Learn the idea

Some materials bend easily, some stay stiff, and some are attracted to magnets or let electricity move through them. Watch to hear a few more examples and compare materials by what they do.

Try it

Gather a sponge, a spoon, paper, foil, and a plastic cup. Ask the child to describe each one with a property word and then sort the objects into groups. If they are ready for a challenge, ask which material would be best for a spoon, a raincoat, or a notebook cover.

Parent guide

Let the child touch, bend, and compare real objects when possible. Correct them gently if they mix up property words. Keep the question simple: what can you notice with your eyes, hands, or a magnet?
