Measure Length with Centimeters
Students estimate, measure, and compare length using centimeter units and a ruler.
Measure Length with Centimeters
What students learn
Students learn to estimate length with a centimeter model, measure with a ruler, and compare two objects. Start with so the idea starts with a small unit.
Why it matters
Length shows up in school supplies, crafts, and everyday objects. shows how to line up the object and read the ruler correctly.
Learn the idea
Students should place the left end at zero, read the unit marks, and compare lengths in the same unit. Then shows how two measured lengths can be compared with longer and shorter language.
Try it
Measure a pencil, a spoon, and a book with a ruler. Ask the student to estimate first, then measure, then say which object is longest and which is shortest.
Parent guide
Hold the ruler still and make sure the child starts at zero, not at one. If an answer seems odd, have them measure again and check the alignment.
