Compare Money Amounts
Students compare coin totals and notice that different coin combinations can have the same value.
Compare Money Amounts
What students learn
Students learn to compare two money amounts and tell which one is greater, smaller, or equal. Open with so students can hear the comparison idea first.
Why it matters
Comparing money helps students decide whether they have enough for something and whether two coin sets are the same value. shows that different coin groups can still match.
Learn the idea
Students should count the cents in each coin group before they compare. gives practice saying how they know one amount is larger than another.
Try it
Write two coin sets on paper, such as 1 dime and 1 nickel versus 2 nickels and 5 pennies. Ask the student to count both totals and tell which is greater or whether they are equal. Then have them explain how the coin values led to the answer.
Parent guide
Keep the comparison simple and visual. Ask the child to count each set aloud before naming the larger amount. If they compare by guessing, ask them to touch each coin and say its value again.
