Tell Time to the Hour and Half Hour

What students learn

Students learn to read clocks that show the hour and the half hour. Begin with so the child notices the hand that tells the hour.

Why it matters

Telling time helps students follow daily routines, know when school starts, and talk about events during the day. gives practice with o'clock times, which are the easiest place to start.

Learn the idea

When the minute hand points to 12, the time is o'clock. When it points to 6, the clock shows the half hour. helps students see both patterns on a clock face.

Try it

Ask the student to use a toy clock or paper clock and set 3 o'clock, 5 o'clock, 3, and 7. Then have them say the time aloud and explain which hand helped them.

Parent guide

Use a clock that the child can move by hand. Start with o'clock times, then half-hour times, and keep repeating the words hour hand and minute hand. If the child gets stuck, point to the hands and ask what each hand is doing.
