Addition as Joining
What students learn
Students learn that addition means joining two parts to make one total within 20. Start with to see the idea in action, then use to hear the counting strategy.
Why it matters
Addition as joining is the first step toward solving many Grade 1 math problems. When students can join parts and count on, they can solve stories, drawings, and equations more confidently. helps them connect the picture to the math sentence.
Learn the idea
A joining problem starts with one group and adds another group to make a new total. The key words are join, put together, and altogether. Use the three moments together so the child can watch the whole process, then say the total, then write the equation.
Try it
Ask the student to build a 7-and-3 model with counters, then a 9-and-5 model. Have them say the total out loud and point to the matching addition sentence after each clip.
Parent guide
Keep the focus on joining rather than memorizing facts. If the student counts from 1 each time, gently ask them to start with the larger part and count on. Use quick objects at home so the idea stays concrete.
