Course
Logic and Truth Tables
An enrichment course for Grade 6 students that builds skill with true and false statements, if-then reasoning, truth tables, and counterexamples.
Logic and Truth Tables
Course overview
This course helps Grade 6 students read statements carefully, decide whether claims are true or false, work with if-then statements, and use truth tables to track logical outcomes. Students also learn how counterexamples can test an argument without needing a long proof.
What students will learn
- Tell the difference between a statement and a sentence that cannot be judged true or false.
- Use negation and simple connectives to track truth values.
- Identify the hypothesis and conclusion in if-then statements.
- Read basic truth tables for simple logical claims.
- Use examples and counterexamples to check arguments.
Lessons
- Statements and Truth Values - Learn how to tell whether a claim can be judged true or false.
- If-Then Statements and Conditionals - Learn how to read conditional statements and notice when they hold or fail.
- Checking Arguments and Counterexamples - Learn how examples and counterexamples test reasoning.
Parent guide
Work slowly and keep the examples short. Ask your student to explain why a claim is true, false, or impossible to judge, and encourage them to justify each answer with a clear reason.
Completion
A student finishes this course when they can read a simple statement, identify an if-then structure, and use a counterexample or truth table idea to check an argument.
