Poetry, Sound, and Imagery
Course overview
This course helps Grade 5 students notice how poems use rhythm, sound, imagery, and figurative language. Students also practice reading poems aloud with enough expression that the lines sound clear, musical, and confident.
What students will learn
- Hear rhythm and meter in a poem.
- Notice imagery and figurative language in poem lines.
- Review how sound devices shape a poem's meaning.
- Read poems aloud with voice, pace, and emphasis.
- Perform a poem clearly for an audience.
Lessons
- Hear Poetry's Beat - Learn how rhythm and meter make poetry sound musical.
- See Images and Figurative Language - Practice finding imagery, comparisons, and sound choices.
- Read Poems Aloud With Expression - Use voice and pace to bring a poem to life.
Parent guide
Work through the lessons in order and keep each session short. First listen for the beat, then study the images and comparisons, and finally read a poem aloud with expression. If the student struggles, go back to the lesson that matches the problem and practice that skill again.
Completion
A student finishes this course when they can identify the beat of a poem, explain its imagery or figurative language, and read it aloud with clear expression.
