Main Idea and Details
Course overview
This course teaches Grade 3 students how to identify the main idea of a text and explain it with key details. Students learn to move from topic words to complete main idea sentences.
What students will learn
- Explain the difference between a topic and a main idea.
- Use titles, keywords, and text features as clues.
- Choose details that support a main idea.
- Write a one-sentence summary with evidence.
- Explain reading answers using text evidence.
Lessons
- Understand the Main Idea - Learn what the main idea is and how it is different from a topic.
- Use Clues to Find the Main Idea - Use keywords, questions, and text features to find the big idea.
- Support the Main Idea with Details - Choose details that prove and explain the main idea.
Parent guide
Use short texts at home: picture books, articles, signs, recipes, or school handouts. Ask the child to say the main idea in one sentence and point to two details that prove it. If the answer is too broad or too tiny, ask, "What does the author want us to understand?"
Completion
A student finishes this course when they can read a short text, write a complete main idea sentence, and choose at least two details that clearly support that main idea.
