Story Comprehension

Course overview

This course helps Grade 2 students understand the main parts of a story. Students learn to notice who is in the story, where the story happens, what problem the characters face, how the problem gets solved, and how the events fit together in order.

What students will learn

  • Identify characters and explain what makes them part of the story.
  • Name the setting by telling when and where the story happens.
  • Find the main problem in a story.
  • Explain the solution or ending that fixes the problem.
  • Retell the important events in the correct order.

Lessons

Parent guide

Read short picture books, folk tales, and classroom stories with your child. Ask the same few questions each time: Who is in the story? Where and when does it happen? What went wrong? How was it fixed? What happened first, next, and last? Repeating the routine helps the skill stick.

Completion

A student finishes this course when they can identify the characters and setting, explain the problem and solution, and retell the major events of a short story in order.
