Poetry, Rhyme, and Songs
Course overview
This course helps Grade 1 students hear rhyme and rhythm in nursery rhymes, use word families to make new words, and read short poems or songs with expression.
What students will learn
- Hear rhyme at the end of words.
- Clap a steady beat in a nursery rhyme.
- Use word families to make and read new words.
- Read a short poem or song with voice and pace.
- Perform a simple read aloud with feeling.
Lessons
- Rhyme and Rhythm - Listen for the beat and the matching ending sounds in nursery rhymes.
- Word Families - Practice changing the first sound while keeping the ending sound the same.
- Read Poems With Expression - Read short poems and songs with a clear voice and lively pace.
Parent guide
Use short sessions and keep the tone playful. Sing or recite one rhyme at a time, then move to word families, then finish with a short poem read aloud. If a child needs help, return to the same clip and slow the pace down.
Completion
A student finishes this course when they can hear rhyme and rhythm, make a few words from a family pattern, and read a short poem or rhyme aloud with expression.
